Contrasty pictures – post-production

 BLOG

March 21, 2018

This week’s post will be dedicated to some more technical aspects: post-production. As a passionate but complete amateur photographer, who only recently came to street photography, I also discovered ways to get the best of the pictures in post-production. To do so, I am working with Lightroom CC 6, but am a complete novice in handling the software. While my efforts are still very much focused on getting the shots right, the work in the digital darkroom is also still very much based on trial and error experimenting with effects. I try to adopt a similar workflow for my pictures in order to develop something like a more personal and consistent signature to my photos, but my skills are still in an early stage – although I do have the impression that they are evolving. Most of the time, I start working on my photos in Lightroom, before experimenting with Silver Efex Pro and sometimes also HDR Efex Pro of Google’s Nik Collection.

As my skills in taking the pictures are evolving – at least, I have this impression – I also want to get the most of those pictures in post-production. Just before starting off the year 2018, I went for a walk around a small lake in the center of France with my better half, our daughter, and my father in law and took my Yashica and my Lumix MFT with me. Light conditions were good – a very sunny and relatively mild day for late December – and there were quite some people walking around the lake with their kids, their dogs, running, or just chatting with each other. Some others were also trying to fish. I too a couple of photos with my digital camera I really liked and then, once back at my computer, tried to push the contrasts in the pictures and getting some quite dramatic results on the sky. Below are only some of the pictures, but I think I am getting a little bit closer to what I want my pictures to look like.
